Holiday Mail for Heroes

Congressman Jim Jordan encourages support for “Holiday Mail for Heroes,” sponsored by the American Red Cross to send holiday greeting cards to members of the U.S. military. The American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes, Inc. will ensure that all cards sent to U.S. service members during the third annual mail drive will arrive safe and in time for the holidays.

Cards should be sent to:

Holiday Mail for Heroes

P.O. Box 5456

Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

Cards will be collected until Dec. 7 and sent throughout the U.S. and around the world.

A few rules and restrictions apply. Only cards, not letters, will be accepted. All cards must be signed. Since cards could go to a service member on active duty, their family, or a former service member, all cards must be entitled “Dear Service Member, Family or Veteran.” There is a limit of 15 cards per person or 50 for a school class or business group. Groups of cards should be bundled in single, large envelopes—it is not necessary to include individual envelopes or postage for cards.

Additionally, do not include personal information such as a home or e-mail address, do not use glitter since this can harm wounded recipients, and do not include inserts of any kind because they will be removed during the screening process.

Pelosi Allows Only 2 Amendments to Healthcare Bill
Last night, as the House Committee on Rules considered H.R. 3962, the Pelosi Government-Run Healthcare Bill, only 2 of 216 submitted amendments were accepted. This denies members 72 hours to review last minute changes and only allows four hours of debate today - which are underway on the floor now. You can see here what Democrats have done to hurry this bill into passage. I'll be joining the debate shortly and voting against this trillion dollar takeover of healthcare.
Jordan Statement on Narrow Passage of Democrat Healthcare Bill

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) made the following statement on the narrow passage of H.R. 3962, the trillion-dollar government takeover of healthcare that passed 220 to 215 with 39 Democrats joining all but one Republican in voting no.

“During this healthcare debate, millions of everyday Americans called their Congressmen, spoke at town hall meetings, or marched on Washington to express their outrage over the prospect of turning their health care over to the federal government. Unfortunately, congressional Democrats ignored their voices and passed their trillion-dollar, 2,000-page government takeover bill in the dark of night.

“Democrat leaders only allowed 2 of the 216 submitted amendments to be debated and receive a vote. I am certain that the American people expect ideas from both parties to be considered, especially in such comprehensive legislation as this. Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats cannot be proud of the process by which they passed this bill.”

“I joined 175 of my colleagues in supporting a common sense alternative health care reform bill that reduced costs, protected the relationship between patients and doctors, and did not raise taxes on families or businesses. Though our plan did not pass, I still believe these long-term fixes we propose are needed to fix what is wrong with the health care system.”

“I was pleased to support a pro-life amendment to the health care bill that honored the fundamental truths that life is sacred, life should be protected, and taxpayer money should never be used to take the life of an unborn child.”

“People in our district are talking about jobs, but in Washington D.C., Democrat leaders seem focused on passing job-killing legislation like cap-and-trade and this federal takeover of health care. Unemployment is at a near 30-year high, and I will continue working to refocus the priorities of Democrat leaders in Congress on stopping the uncontrolled federal spending and beginning to work on turning this economy around to create jobs again."
President's Own Numbers Show Stimulus Has Failed to Put Americans Back to Work

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) said this morning’s announcement that national unemployment has reached 10.2% is further evidence that the $787 billion federal stimulus bill passed in February is not producing the jobs the Obama Administration promised.

“The number one issue in our part of Ohio is jobs, but as unemployment rises to a 26-year high, the White House and leaders in Congress are still focused on passing job-killing programs like cap-and-trade and a federal takeover of health care,” said Jordan.

Jordan pointed to a February 17, 2009 White House document* projecting that federal stimulus spending would create 7,200 jobs in the 4th Congressional District of Ohio. As of October 30th, according to an Obama Administration website**, the nearly $150 million of stimulus money spent in the district since February has “created or saved” just 205 jobs.

“Even according to their own rosy numbers, the Obama Administration admits to spending over $720,000 on each job they claim to have created or saved,” Jordan said. “This stimulus bill has been a colossal failure, and the money we are borrowing to finance it will take generations to pay back.”

“We need to end this out-of-control federal spending and turn our focus towards fiscal responsibility and job creation,” Jordan added. “Over 80 of my colleagues have joined me in cosponsoring a bill called the REBOUND Act (H.R. 3140) that would halt the stimulus and bailout spending so we can do just that."

New Healthcare Proposal Unveiled in House

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) issued the following statement on the release of a new health care proposal by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the U.S. House:

“The health care proposal unveiled by Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats today merely repackages the same bad ideas the American people rejected just a few months ago.”

“Americans want real health care reform that will cut costs while protecting access to their doctor. They don’t want a government takeover of the health care system that will raise taxes, ration care and put bureaucrats in charge of important medical decisions.”

“The liberal leadership in Congress might think they have the votes to ram this bill through the House, but the American people won’t just sit there and take it. Congress needs to get focused on job creation and real health care reform. That’s what I’m fighting for in Washington.”
See the Healthcare Bill for Yourself

Before Congress ended the week, House Democrats unveiled their newest healthcare proposal - twice the size of their first version but with more bureaucracy and ways to get between a patient and their doctor. You can read the bill here to see what House Democrats think is best for you...
You may have heard me mention HR 3400, Empowering Patients First, the plan I believe has the right solutions. You can read what I believe is responsible reform here.
Issa, Jordan Call on Towns, Kucinich to Hold Hearing on Obama’s Latest Czar

House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Domestic Policy Subcommittee Ranking Member Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) have sent a letter to Committee Chairman Eldophus Towns (D-MD) and Subcommittee Chairman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) for controversial Obama appointee Kevin Jennings to appear before the Committee.

Among the many questionable activities he engaged in prior to being named Safe Schools Czar, Jennings conducted a seminar containing graphic and disturbing sexually explicit information for 12 year-old schoolchildren while serving as executive director of the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network, as well as an incident in which he failed to report a 15 year-old student’s sexual abuse from an older man.

“The vetting undertaken by this Administration during its hiring processes, as well as the standards it imposes, appear inadequate. In some cases, individuals have displayed troubling behavior that renders them unfit to serve the American people. This is especially true for Mr. Jennings,” wrote Issa and Jordan.

Jennings, who once declared “We have to quit being afraid of the religious right….I don’t care what they think! Drop dead!” in a 2000 speech, wrote about his past illegal drug abuse in his memoir, expressing no regret for his action or words of caution to young people.

Issa and Jordan wrote, “Mr. Jennings' past behavior calls into question not only his fitness to serve the American people, but also the Administration's vetting procedures and standards for his employment. If non-confirmed czars are not required to appear before a Senate confirmation panel, then they should, at the very least, appear before this Committee to justify their behavior to the American people.”

Full text of the letter can be found here.
Jordan Introduces $84 Billion in Spending Cuts

Today, Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) offered the following comments on the defeat of his fiscally-responsible alternative to the Democrat spending package likely to pass on Friday:

"My proposal was a modest first step towards a balanced federal budget. There is no more important issue to the economic future of our country, so I will continue making the case that the federal government should tighten its belt instead of always asking the American people to do so."

Jordan’s plan would have saved taxpayers $84 billion just by holding the line on non-defense spending to 2008 levels. The amendment was defeated on a party-line vote in House Rules Committee.
Jordan Accepting Academy Applications

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) is accepting applications from area students interested in attending any of the nation’s service academies.

The academies are: the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York; the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; and the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. (The United States Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional appointment. Applicants are considered solely on the basis of an annual nationwide competition.)

2009 applicants must be between 17 and 23 years old on July 1, 2010, unmarried, and U.S. citizens. Those who seek nomination through Jordan’s office must be permanent residents of Ohio’s Fourth Congressional District, which includes all of Allen, Auglaize, Champaign, Hancock, Hardin, Logan, Marion, Morrow, Richland, and Shelby Counties and part of Wyandot County.

Interested students should contact Jordan’s Lima office by phone at 419-999-6455 to request an application or visit http://jordan.house.gov. The deadline for the return of applications and supporting information is Friday, October 16, 2009.

After the first of the year, academies will offer appointments to students who receive a congressional nomination and meet entrance requirements.
