A top Republican who defended President Trump throughout his impeachment is hopeful he will restart the economy once the coronavirus begins to fade.
Speaking with Dana Perino on Fox News Thursday, Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan championed Trump for producing "one of the strongest economies ever" and said he thinks an economic rebound from the coronavirus "will happen quickly."
"I call it the great American comeback," Jordan said. "President Trump led one of the strongest economies ever. I think we're going to have the great American comeback and get back to that, and I think it will happen quickly."
Jordan noted that Jason Furman, a top economist in the Obama administration, predicted a Trump surge leading into the election, spurred on by what he believes will be positive economic data in the summer and fall.
"I thought it was interesting earlier this week the economist from the Obama administration said that he thinks we're going to have a V-shaped recovery, as the president has been talking about, and we're going to have robust and strong economic gains," Jordan said.
Jordan was referencing Furman's comments in April when he told a Zoom meeting of ex-Federal Reserve chairs that he thinks Trump will be able to tout explosive economic numbers as the coronavirus pandemic slows.
“The Trump argument will be he’s producing the fastest job growth and fastest economic growth in history," said Furman. "If he has any ability to do nuance, he would say, ‘We are not there yet, reelect me to finish the job.'”
