Jordan Applauds USPS Decision to Save Mansfield Jobs

July 6, 2009
Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) applauded today's announcement from the Northern Ohio District of the United States Postal Service (USPS) to reverse the proposed relocation of mail processing operations from Mansfield to Akron.

In a June 24, 2009 letter announcing the completion of the long-awaited Area Mail Processing study, USPS District Manager Don Marshall wrote to Congressman Jordan that "…After careful review, it has been determined that there are currently no significant opportunities to improve efficiency and/or service through consolidation of mail processing operations at the Akron P&DC. So, no significant changes will be made at this time."

Jordan said he credited a community-wide effort of postal workers, elected officials, local media, and residents.

He said his staff had been in contact with postal union and management officials about the issue for almost a year. On February 13, 2009, Jordan requested the U.S. Postmaster General provide him a detailed explanation of how the proposed consolidation would save money without hurting service. Having received an unsatisfactory response, Jordan's staff attended the April 7, 2009 public meeting in Mansfield, where they announced Jordan's intent to call upon the General Accounting Office (GAO) to conduct a third-party analysis of any USPS claims of savings. On April 20, 2009, Jordan and California Rep. Darrell Issa sent a joint letter to the GAO about the Mansfield situation.

"This proves that by working together, gaining the attention of the decision-makers, and making a strong case based on the facts, great things can happen and jobs can be saved," said Jordan. "Moving forward, we need to make sure that our facility keeps improving while we keep a watchful eye and hold government leaders accountable at all levels," he added.
