Jordan Offers Balanced Budget as Alternative to GOP Plan

April 15, 2011
Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) today joined his Republican Study Committee (RSC) colleagues in offering a balanced budget proposal on the House floor. The measure, which came within 18 votes of passing, was offered as a conservative alternative to the Republican spending plan for Fiscal Year 2012.

Speaking on the House floor, Jordan said (video) the RSC balanced budget "…does what every single family, every single small business owner, every single state government, local government has to do. It actually puts forth a budget that balances, lives within your means, doesn't spend more than you take in, gets to balance within a definable period of time, and that's why we think this is appropriate."

Jordan said the federal government is projected to borrow a record $1.6 trillion this fiscal year. The RSC proposal seeks to balance the federal budget by reducing spending by more than $9 trillion over ten years. Savings include repealing the ObamaCare program, freezing total discretionary spending at 2008 levels, eliminating earmarks, reducing mandatory spending while protecting Medicare and Social Security by putting these vital programs on a sustainable path.

"The American people are tired of the out-of-control spending, and they want Washington to get their act in order and stop spending money we don't have," Jordan said. "Our balanced budget proposal provides a clear path for how you can balance the federal budget without raising taxes and get our economy moving again."
