Jordan praises IRS reform legislation, calls for continued investigation

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) made the following comments regarding several pieces of legislation that the U.S. House of Representatives passed today related to the IRS targeting of conservative non-profits in recent years:

"The IRS systematically targeted the First Amendment rights of the American people. The legislation we passed today will go a long way in making sure that such targeting never happens again.

"But this does not mean that the IRS investigation is over. Far from it. The Justice Department and former U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C. Ronald Machen failed to uphold the law and convene a grand jury. Instead, by giving Lois Lerner cover, they played politics with power and have impeded the Oversight committee's investigation.

"We will not rest until we get to the bottom of this egregious targeting of American citizens for their political views. We owe it to citizens of every viewpoint to get to the bottom of this chilling attempt to suppress free speech."
