Jordan statement on today’s Speaker vote
"I joined my House Freedom Caucus colleagues in supporting Rep. Daniel Webster in the conference vote for Speaker of the House yesterday, because his message of changing ‘business as usual' in Washington is exactly what needs to happen. But Paul Ryan won support from the vast majority of our conference, and today I backed him on the House floor. Speaker Ryan is as hard working and innovative as they come, and I hope he will provide the House of Representatives and the nation with a positive, conservative vision during his term. I am happy he agreed to reforms that will allow more members to have a say in the legislative process, because that will only serve to benefit our constituents. Additionally, while Speaker Ryan had once demanded that conservatives relinquish some procedural powers, we rejected that idea and made it clear that the ‘motion to vacate' remains the important tool that the Founders intended it to be."
"I have heard and understand the concerns many people have expressed about Speaker Ryan on immigration, and my colleagues and I will hold him to his promise not to bring up immigration legislation under President Obama. If he would continue to be Speaker under a future President, that would not change my position against amnesty for those who are in our country illegally. I have always believed that the first step to fixing our immigration system must be to secure our borders and enforce the law."
"Republicans from across the spectrum recognize that Washington needs to change the way it does business. Changing Washington is a high priority for me, and I look forward to working in earnest with Speaker Ryan and my colleagues to begin that process by enacting reforms that empower individual representatives and restore respect to the U.S. House of Representatives."
