"Until we get control of our borders, we will never truly solve the problem of illegal immigration," said Jordan. "Border security must come first."
The upgrades under the System Enhancement Package (SEP) program and other modernization programs are included in the Fiscal Year 2008 Department of Defense Authorization bill, which was approved with Jordan's support by a 397 to 27 vote today.
"This is an exciting development, giving me an opportunity to play a bigger role in the legislative oversight functions of Congress," said Jordan. "I expect that we will examine some of the highest profile issues being considered by Congress."
H.R. 1684, the Department of Homeland Security Authorization Act, provides the framework for the department's appropriations for Fiscal Year 2008.
SPEECH OF
HON. JIM JORDAN
OF OHIO
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
MAY 3, 2007
Mr. JORDAN of Ohio. Mr. Speaker, I appreciate the opportunity to express my opposition to H.R. 1592, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.
This measure represents an unprecedented departure from the deeply rooted American principle of equal justice under law.
Justice should be blind. It should be equal for all Americans, and it should be rendered in a criminal justice system that does not take such issues as race, gender, and religion into consideration.
The bill, sponsored by Congressman John Conyers (D-Michigan), would provide additional punishment for crimes determined to have been perpetrated based upon the victim's religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.
The 90-minute classified briefing will be provided by:
-General David Petraeus, Commander of Multinational Force Iraq
-General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
-Gordon England, Deputy Secretary of Defense, and
-John Negroponte, Deputy Secretary of State.
