Jordan chairs college free speech hearing with Adam Carolla, Ben Shapiro
Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) chaired a joint subcommittee hearing today examining free speech on college campuses.
Featured witnesses at the hearing included comedian Adam Carolla and commentator Ben Shapiro, who testified about their first-hand experiences being the targets of activists on college campuses. They testified with law professor Nadine Strossen, college administrator Dr. Michael Zimmerman, and Fred Lawrence with the Anti-Defamation League, about the increasingly alarming attacks on the First Amendment by faculty, administrations, and students alike on college campuses around the country.
During the hearing Rep. Jordan said:
“College is a place for young minds to be intellectually bombarded with new, challenging ideas. Unfortunately, today on many campuses, students and faculty are forced into self-censorship out of a fear of triggering, violating a safe space, a micro-aggression, or being targeted by a bias response team. Restricting speech that does not conform to popular opinion contradicts the First Amendment’s principles and the right to speak freely.”
